The Subversive Action of Relaxation: Yoga Nidra (Yoga Sleep)
Thursday, May 8th 6:00-7:00pm
Instructor: John Hawkins
Fee: $10
John Hawkins has been teaching Yoga primarily in the Integral Yoga style for 10 years. He is certified to teach all levels of Yoga. He is former owner of The Art of Yoga Studio in Athens, Georgia, and has been teaching in Bellingham since 2004.
In our recurring times of war and economic uncertainties our stress levels continue to rise. Americans work longer hours than citizens of any other country and as a result, we are more sleep deprived. Relaxation has been reduced to mere crashing after a hard day's work. It has been relegated to a minor part of our lives. Many of us sleep a troubled sleep only to rise and again walk into a day crammed with hurried work. It seems that authentic relaxation is subversive in this society which places much value of our function in life.
The practice of Yoga Nidra (Yogic Sleep or Deep Relaxation) takes into deeper parts of ourselves allowing us to truly rest. It is a way to learn more of who we are and experience the meaning and values of our lives. Through Yoga Nidra we engage our bodies, our energies and our minds and learn the blissful art of conscious relaxation. A relaxed person is not only more effective, but happier.

Session 1: April 1- May 6
Session 2: June 3-July 8
Fee: $36/session
A practical and lively look at the philosophy and psychology of Yoga.
We will use the Yoga Sutras, the authoritative text for understanding
Yoga. Beyond the postures and breathing what are the potentially
life-changing concepts of Yoga? How can we help ourselves with Yoga on a
daily basis in all situations? We will chant the Yoga Sutras, do a
word- for- word translation and discuss the meaning of each Sutra.
Emphasis will be on the practical implications of this ancient text to
our current situations.
Ann Rogers has taught Yoga Sutras since 1990. She has made regular trips
to India to study the Yoga Sutras with TKV Desikachar.
